OneDrive is simply a storage location in the cloud. It can be compared to a flash drive, t-drive, h-drive, or other non-cloud or cloud based storage locations. You can add file folders and organize your files similarly to how you would use a traditional storage system. A benefit of using OneDrive is you can access your files from any device, at any location by simply logging into your work Office 365 account. There is no need to use VPN to access OneDrive. Another benefit is that file folders and documents can be shared with others with editing or view only rights. This allows you a greater level of flexibility with who can see or edit your documents. Additionally, you have 1TB of storage in your OneDrive which is significantly more space than your school H-drive.
